Jakov Jakoulov was born in Moscow, Russia, where he studied in Gnesin Music Academy and Moscow Conservatory as pianist and composer. In 1987 Jakoulov left Moscow to begin to work in Munich, Germany and elsewhere in Europe. Since 1990 he lives in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a former member of the faculties of Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky, Boston University and Community Music Center in Boston. Jakov Jakoulov holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Composition of Boston University.
Jakov Jakoulov is an author of three ballets, five instrumental concertos, five string quartets, music for over 20 theatrical, TV and cinema productions and numerous symphonic, chamber and choral works.
Since beginning his professional career at the age twelve, Jakov Jakoulov has gained a considerable experience as both composer and pianist. His works have been commissioned and performed by Armenian State National Symphony Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Bolshoi State Opera and Ballet Theatre, the String Quartet of National Symphony of Russia, BBC Scotland, Dudley House Music Series at Harvard University, Dallas Chamber Music Society in Texas, WGBH Public Radio, “Trillum”, New England String Ensemble in Boston, “Bachanalia” Chamber Orchestra in New York City, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, among others.
During last five years Jakoulov has received Annual Award of ASCAP. In 1999 he has received a commission from World-Wide Concurrent Premieres Commissioning Fund and National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts and American Composers Forum to write a composition to be premiered in 15 locations throughout United States.
