Mari Moriya - soprano

Mari Moriya was awarded First Place in the 2006 UNCG School of Music’s Annual Charles A. Lynam Vocal Competition and received an invitation to perform with the Greensboro Symphony. She made her Met debut this season as the Queen of the Night in the acclaimed Julie Taymor production of Die Zauberflote, and this season she will reprise the role with Portland Opera. Next season she makes her European debut as Liu in Turandot with Opera Ireland. Past performances include Elizetta in El matrimonio segreto, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, and Konstanze in Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail. In addition to these roles, Ms. Moriya's repertoire includes Lucia di Lammermoor, Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos, Susan in Le nozze di Figaro, and Lakme. Ms. Moriya has won several singing competitions, including national finalist at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the first prize at Cla Muze Vocal competition, and First Prize at the Veronica Dunn International Vocal competition in Dublin. Ms. Moriya has been selected to represent Japan at the 2007 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Moriya earned her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Musashino Academy of Music in her native Japan, and attended Mannes College of Music in the Professional Study Diploma Program.
