The Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra Programs consist of four main ensembles. These groups serve students of all ages, from beginners in elementary school through advanced high school players. The Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra is directed by Dr. Bruce Kiesling. Designed for advanced players, this ensemble enjoys performing exciting orchestral music of all styles. Members of the GSYO can participate in an annual concerto competition and may also have the opportunity to perform in a chamber orchestra that specializes in music of the Classical period. The Greensboro Symphony Youth Strings is conducted by Karen Collins. Focusing on string orchestra repertoire, this ensemble is for high school, middle school, and advanced elementary school students. The Youth Strings specialize in refining their technique and ensemble skills. The Greensboro Symphony Allegro Strings is led by Gregorio Midero. The Allegro Strings ensemble introduces young players to ensemble techniques and performance. Allegro is designed for beginning players and students in the first years of instruction. Composed of many of the Triad’s best and brightest young musicians, the ensembles also attract outstanding students from Raleigh, Fayetteville, Charlotte, Southern Virginia, and Eastern Tennessee. Students in all groups enjoy unparalleled orchestral opportunities, lifelong friendships, a strong complement to their school music education, and a deeper connection with music.
