As a continuation
of the overall curricular cycle, the orchestra
presents annual concerts designed especially
for middle school students. Titled “Music
in the Middle,” these exciting concerts
often serve to broaden students’ perceptions
of the orchestra. Last year’s theme of “Alive
and Well” featured an entire program of
works by living composers.
This year’s
theme for Music in the Middle is “Six Degrees
of the Symphony.” In this concert, the
Symphony will demonstrate many styles of orchestral
music. The program showcases opera, ballet, Romantic
symphonies, film music, popular music, and concerto
repertoire. Composers for the 2006 program include
Stravinsky, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev,
and John Williams. Students and teachers participating
in this program are also supplied with classroom
materials and curricular resources to prepare
students for the concert.
