The Greensboro Symphony OrKIDStra series provides entertaining concerts for 4-year old children and their families. These programs have taken many forms in the past, and have been performed in venues from Elementary Schools to Triad Stage. The OrKIDStra series combines classical music with the promotion of literacy and the development of positive social skills.
Freckles and the Great Beach Rescue was the theme of the Greensboro Symphony’s 2012 OrKIDStra concerts. The book, by local author Ellen Bryant Lloyd, was brought to life through performances by the Greensboro Symphony Percussion Ensemble, larger-than-life projections of the book’s illustrations, a highly engaging performance by acclaimed storyteller Logie Meachum, and even an appearance by “Freckles” herself!
In 2013, the OrKIDStra program will be based on the book A Million Chameleons by local Greensboro author James Young. This book introduces new vocabulary and colors with a simple rhyming framework. The story also promotes diversity and harmony. The concert program will feature narration of the book, by Logie Meachum, along with musical selections by the Greensboro Symphony's percussion ensemble plus a short sing-along.
On May 14 and 15, the concert will be performed for 4-year olds in the Guilford Child Development program. On May 18, the concert will be performed for the general public.
